This is a great site and a great service to all with Orkney roots, thank you for maintaining this valuable resource. My great great grandfather was Murdoch Balfour. Murdoch left the Orkneys before 1840 and married Alice Bamber in Poulton le Fylde (Blackpool). He was probably a mariner and we are interested in hearing from any relatives. s.hollyman@sympatico.ca

Would enjoy getting in touch with any descendants of William Strong Eunson, born at Brews, Fair Isle in June of 1864. "Old Bill" was chronicled in a book, "A Pioneer of the Fishing Industry", written by Jerry Eunson in 1958. I am a great grandson and have had the opportunity to visit Scotland but have never had the chance to travel to Orkney. Thank you.

My father - Maxwell Robert Gowans Kirkness - looking for his family. I know he was born in New Zealand. His Father was Robert Kirkness, his mother was Agnes Butters (I think). Agnes' family came from the Glasgow area (I believe). My grandfather's (Robert) family came from the Orkney Islands. Any help with the Kirkness link would be appreciated.

My gggGrandfather, WILLIAM MALCOLM (b.1786), was a brother to JOHN MALCOLM who was minister of Firth and Stenness from 1705 - 1807. I believe he(John) was married to KATHERINE SINCLAIR. They had two sons, JOHN and WILLIAM, who was subsequently minister of Firth and Stenness from 1807 - 1843, and minister of the Free Church of Firth 1843 - 1857. I am particularly interested in finding information about the parents of the elder set of Malcolm brothers. I just discovered your wonderful website, and would love to visit Orkney one day!

Read with interest the many names, I wish to add one more GEORGE STOCKAND born <1834> in Scotland (verbal history says in the Orkney Islands) I believe he married a Catherine but I do not know if it was in Canada 0r not, I am fairly sure that his oldest child,Willie, was born in Canada and he was 24 at the time of the 1881 Canadian census, so that wopuld mean that George would not have arrived in Canada after Any leads would be Greatly appreciated Bill

Does anyone know who I could contact to get a history of the parish of Firth? I am also interested in finding out if the Firth surname is native to the Orkney Islands or if someone of that last name emigrated from Scotland or England to start a family line in this area. I am attempting to put to rest a debate regrading this surname which some solid facts. Thanks! :)

James Matheson, my Scottish ggrandfather was born in 1860. We know little about him, except he was fostered by a Forsyth family and lived in Argyllshire. Among his belongings was found a photo by Charles Spence titled 'Three young men taken at Lerwick'. Family anecdotes suggest a relationship to James Matheson of Matheson Jardine. Any links very much appreciated.

Looking for Grandfathers Kin, his Name was Humble, he had 2 sisters Jean and Jessie and we think 2 brothers, 1 by the name of John, the other unknowen. Grandpa Ferguson father was John Ferguson, and his mothers maiden name was Rousay. The closest I can find for any Fergusons on the Orkney Islands is Fergus. We know that the Ferguson!s landed in Ontario, then moved west to Saskatchewan, settling in an area they named Orcadia, that they named after thier homeland Orkney. That is about 7 miles west of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Any and all information will be greatly apprciated. By the way, Grandpa Ferguson, was the only one to have any children, (3) my father, uncle and aunt. That is to say that we know of, if there is a skeleton or two in the closet, thats O.K. too. For years we have always wanted information about the Ferguson Clan, BEFORE grandpa!s time, His parents, grandparents, etc., etc. Thanking you in advance for your understanding and co-operation. Hopefull: Lois Gayle Ferguson..

The scope of your work and scholarship is professional and very welcome. Orkney Island history and migrations are a personal interest. Contacts between Pict, Scandinavian, and Celt very early here appear to begin the earliest descriptions of the people who were to be the Scots. As a Cromartie descendant, your work gives insight into my own family's past, and I hope to learn a great deal more regarding Orkney history. Thank you.
