Ancestor: Early 1700's to SE United States from Scotland, believed to
highlands(Islands?) William Reid.
Date: Tuesday, December 13, 2005
Time: 17:31

My mother's maiden name is Reid, her name is Elizabeth(middle) other common names in large family than settled in SE USA, mountain areas, became small hold farmers. William, George, Douglas, common names, even now. Every generation has singers. One main one. My generation, me, next generation, my daughter Mary. Probably next will be her son Colin. Have always been drawn to the Islands, music, mythology, have read many books, films, etc. When my husband, Robert, returned from the first Gulf War in 1991, we were living in Germany. He came back very tired, had lost 50 lbs , at 5'9" heighed 140 lbs. I took one look at him and said, we are going to Skye. We did, stayed at a quiet Inn as far away as we could get, we played and sang often in the evenings in the pub with the locals(They loved American Country Western stuff, so we obliged). He was ill for many days, but finally started becoming better with many long walks, good simple food, and the music. At the time, I KNEW we had to get there, for Bob's sake, and perhaps mine. We are home now, here in the Northwest, but I still yearn towards the Islands, and I think I must go there some day.

Possibly my great-grandfather. Have absolutely no other info-born-died-wife-children,etc. Found this name in my grandfather's 1909 version of "The Orkney Book". In 1909, he was in Toronto, Canada. Related to my grandfather, James Wilson Thomson, born 1900, member of Toronto Fire Dept. into the 1960's, member of masonic order in Toronto, married to Ethel Proctor. Any info about Tower House and Robert H would be appreciated. Thanks.

Violet McConnell enquired re George Gullion on 1 November. As far as I know, he was worn in 1775 in Westray, Orkney. Married Isabella, the daughter of John Allan and Mary Allan nee Harcus. Isabella died in 1858 aged 86. They had at least five children, one of whom was James, born 1805. He married Janet Scott in 1828 and they were the parents of George and James who joined the Hudson Bay Company in Canada. George Gullion was my g.g.g.g.grandfather and one of his sons moved to Aberdeen, Scotland. This was my branch of the family and they then became known as Gillan. I only know the very basic facts about the Hudson Bay brothers

Cross referenced research can show a number of variations of the same name, these taken verbally and written down by non-family members, then transposed a number of times. I have three variations of Cleat, Cleet, Clett in one set of census returns for the children of one family. Foubister has as variations Fourbister, Fobister Foobister and probably many more alternatives. Also childrens names are shortened, nicknamed and spelt differently as the child grows to adulthood. Tracing family groups is much easier as these can easily be recognised. Also the reporting of births ,deaths etc is very often by other relations. Jumping backwards and forwards can also help to identify a family member. Everybody makes mistakes but when these get printed it's easy to think they are correct. Hopr the comments help other researchers.

The name McCorkle has gone thru many changes of spelling, including MacCorkill and MacCorquodale---which are but variations of the same line, my own it seems. It comes from the norse personal name Thorkil ( for "cauldron of the Thunder-Spirit") and refers to Thor the Thunderer. The line, like those of Thormond and Gunni( Gunr or Gunnir I believe to be more likely,) are each themselves descendant of Leod, Olaf and Magnus, and are of the people of Norway. I am searching for any information on the lineage there. My thanks for any assistance.

David Stanger was just 18 when he arrived and died not long after at Albany, Western Australia. Dad's sister apparently immigrated to Canada with her husband, George CONNELLY.I am interested in trying to locate Mary and George's grand-daughter, Lois WILLISCROFT nee CONNELLY. Further to my posts on 23 Feb & 6 Jan 2005 Re Orkney Shearer DNA Genealogy Tests :- 1. Recently an additional assessment of my DNA (additional fee) has indicated that my Paternal Shearer ancestors belong to the R1a Haplogroup - which seems to indicate original Norse (possibly Viking?) Ancestry for my male forebears. 2. More recently a very distant Orkney Shearer cousin - a recent participant in the Shearer Family Tree Project - received his result. Of the 12 Y DNA Markers tested he and I match precisely in 11. On a purely scientific basis this has enabled the geneticists at www.familytreedna.com to state that we "very probably" share mutual paternal ancestry - however given our previous detailed checks of IGI Births, Baptisms, & Marriage Records - this mutual ancestry now appears conclusive! In other words these Y chromosome DNA tests have effectively disproved the possibility that any of the recorded Paternal fathers in our ownly mutual Shearer ancestry - back to Peter Shearer born c1765 (the single known Shearer link between me & my distant Shearer cousin) - could have been any males other than from our researched Stronsay Shearer Line! I am now all the more keen for some male (surname)Shearers with Orkney Ancestry, without known/established Stronsay ancestry, to participate in DNA Tests to try to establish whether or not genetically there might be some entirely separate Shearer Trees within Orkney. My DNA tests were conducted by www.familytreedna.com John Shearer

I am hoping to find information concerning May/Marjorie Rendall, christened 13 April 1780 in Westray. She was the daughter of Jerome Rendall and Elspit/Elizabeth Petrie of Breckaskaill and the wife of Thomas Scott, who at the time of their marriage was living on Westray but may well have been from Sanday. Since I cannot locate them on Westray census records, I suspect they may have spent their married life on Sanday. May died 15 January 1867 at Breckaskaill on Westray I am aware of four children born to this couple: Elizabeth Scott, christened 2 May 1800 George Scott, christened 28 Jan 1805 Thomas Scott, christened 11 Dec 1807 Thomas Scott, christened 27 Nov 1812 No doubt the first Thomas died as a child. However, at the time of May's death, her son was listed in her obituary as Captain Thomas Scott of the Mary Gold. Can anyone help me with information about this family? Joan Barrett

I found a book titled "The Orkney Book" in my grandfather's things (James Wilson Thomson - former fireman - Toronto, Canada). The book is inscribed "Robert H. Thomson, 524 Manning Ave. Toronto (Canada), late of Tower House, Melsetter, Orkney. I would guess that this is my great-grandfather but have been unable to find any information. Any help in tracking this down would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you from one so far away wishing to be able to trace my fathers "Spence" family who I believe can be traced to the last monachs of the Shetland Islands. Please note my new email address. I would be happy to hear from old friends with whom I've lost touch and anyone interested in the Ruslands/Russells of Shapinsay, the Groundwaters of Orphir and the Shearers of Stronsay and Orphir. For the last five years I've been researching the lives of British-born members of the 7th U.S. Cavalry [1866-90] and several biographies have already been published in THE CROW'S NEST, the biannual newsletter-cum-journal of the Custer Association of Great Britain. Any information on this subject would be much appreciated
